Adams (Henry) is born on Beacon Hill.

February 16, 1838

The son of Charles Francis and Abigail (Brooks), Henry Adams is born at 57 Mount Vernon Street and later writes “[He was] Born under the shadow of the State House.” He graduates from Harvard College, studies law in Germany, and serves as secretary to his father at the Court of St. James. He marries Marian “Clover” Hooper. In 1872, Adams begins teaching at Harvard after initially refusing the job, declaring, “[I knew] nothing of history, less about teaching, and too much about Harvard.” He lives at 91 Marlborough Street (271 Clarendon Street) from 1873 to 1880, and moves to Washington D.C. in 1877. A world traveler and author, he writes a notable autobiography in 1906.* Adams dies in Washington, D.C. on March 27, 1918.
